Page 14. Acceptance

Acceptance
February 2021

Ever faithful, always near, she keeps me company within the stillness of night, the quiet hours of dusk, and as each new day dawns. My imagination’s a beautiful creature. She spends her days wandering far beyond the walls of my physical limitations, collecting curiosities and searching for clues to solve seemingly unsolvable queries. I love the way she frees my thoughts and awakens my creativity. But she can’t prevent uncomfortable questions from threading through my thoughts. How to cope with constant adversity? How to find stability despite uncertainty? How to find happiness, despite the brokenness?

I am not living my dreams. This is not the life I envisioned. Shouldn’t I be happier, healthier, wealthier? Wasn’t I supposed to have more? Wasn’t I supposed to be more?
No.

No-one’s entitled to an easy life. Expecting any different only deepens discontent and pulls us further from fulfilment. Of course, life could always be better, but it could be worse. It’s easy to become overly focused on the negatives while within the midst of adversity, but by doing so, we disempower ourselves and overlook the power of acceptance. Not surrender, but acceptance.

When we truly accept that adversity and deficiency are part of reality, we gift ourselves greater peace. This gives us greater mental clarity and brings adaptability to bloom. By practising acceptance, we empower ourselves to better cope with difficult circumstances.

We may not be not living our dreams. But with acceptance, we can live a better life..

With warmth,
Davey
